World-Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms, USA (WWOOF-USA) is part of a world-wide effort to link volunteers with organic farmers, promote an educational exchange, and build a global community conscious of ecological farming practices.

WWOOF-USA publishes a printed and online directory of more than 1000 farms that host volunteers in exchange for meals and accommodations. It is an opportunity to learn practical farming skills, explore the US, connect with where food comes from, be part of the real food movement, and have a fun, inexpensive eco-vacation.

We are about 2 hours west of Washington DC and are a 20 acre intensively managed sustainable artisan farm. Our goals are lots of diversity and variety and we avoid the use of pesticides. Suggested length of stay for volunteers is a 3 week minimum stay, or up to the entire farm production and harvest season. Volunteers are needed anytime from April 1st until October 1st or longer if needed for a special project. Lodging will be in a private cabin on the farm in close proximity to the main farm house. Breakfast is generally about 8am daily along with a short meeting to discuss the day's work activities and requirements. Other meals may be either shared or on your own. Most food will come from the farm but there are several stores in Romney where you may purchase anything additional. We generally make a minimum of two trips to town weekly. The cabin has full kitchen and bathroom amenities. No major construction projects are planned at the farm in the near term but minor projects like fencing, animal shelters, feeders, and others could be done at any time. Every intern will have an opportunity to do everything that is part of the farm operation. Work days are generally Tuesday through Saturday with our local Romney Farmers Market held on Saturday morning. Sunday and Monday will be your regular days off. There may be other markets, festivals and special sales throughout the season. Fridays are Pick Your Own (PYO) day with customers coming to the farm. Hours can be flexible but normally we have the breakfast meeting, then we get to work. Tasks cover the whole range of vegetable, fruit and herb growing - tilling, planting, weeding, picking, cleaning, packaging and sales. Post harvest tasks will involve canning and drying fruits and vegetables. Crops include raspberries, blackberries, tomatoes, peppers, summer squash, etc. There are also daily tasks associated with feeding the laying chickens, gathering eggs, managing the pastured broilers, feeding the sheep and lambs, etc. Other tasks include lots of weeding, mowing, trimming, and landscaping. There will also be berry picking, fruit tree management, and various tasks associated with beekeeping. Activities are wide ranging but all are an integral part of the overall farm management. We are always open to new crops, new varieties, and new activities for farm income. If there is something that we are not currently growing, and you think you can market it profitably, then we'll grow it. We are located in the Potomac Highlands area of West Virginia. There are lots of opportunities for a wide range of outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, hunting, and fishing. Lots of inspiration for writers, artists, photographers, and musicians.
