Traveling singer serenades while learning at Avoyelles market

MOREAUVILLE -- Visitors to WesMar Farms dairy goat market were treated to performance by a traveling Frenchman playing a backpacker's guitar and singing songs in his native French.

"I asked him, 'Do you mind playing at the market for customers who come?'" said Marguerite Constantine, who owns and operates WesMar Farms along with her husband, West Constantine.

Julien Sorreau of Angers, France, had been staying in Moreauville helping the Constantines on their dairy goat farm as a volunteer. Both Sorreau and the Constantines are members of World Wide Opportunities On Organic Farms.

Besides caring for and milking the goats, Constantine taught Sorreau how to make soap and goat cheese during the week-and-a-half he had been staying on the farm.

"Giving a hand and learning something is a good way to experience it," said Sorreau, who is also working on a documentary and needs to be inspired by the people he meets. "It's a good way to discover local cultures."

The guitarist had traveled in the U.S. two years before for about nine months but felt he was "missing something."
